5 Ways to improve your decision making skills

“Initiative is not speculative- it is active. If you don’t take it now, it will not be there later.”- David Molapo. Decision making is a key skill in the workplace and is very important if you want to be an effective leader. The ability to make a good decision with all the available information is very vital. There is no single formula that one can use in all situations because all situations present different challenges.

Now, the question becomes, how does one stop making bad decisions? Well, like I said before, there is no single formula but one needs a systematic approach to decision-making so that all decisions are made with bold confidence. Here are a few steps to help;

Set Up a Positive Decision- Making Environment

Do not let personal agendas get in the way of making sound decisions. Always keep the object in mind and focus on achieving it, this will drive the direction or effectiveness of your decisions. Decisions should be made in harmony and respect to all involved.

Think of Possible Solutions

Craft as many workable options as possible. Be creative in contemplating the value of each possible solution.

Weigh the Solutions (Evaluate)

Consider the risk, consequence(s) and practicality of each possible solution. Begin your pruning; get rid of all other solutions that seem to have lost some value during the evaluation process.

Decide, Decide, Decide

This can be both thrilling and traumatic but it has to be done. Think ahead soberly, carefully and practically determine what makes the decision “the right one” then GO FOR IT.
