University of Botswana’s 40th Anniversary

At the University of Botswana’s 40th Anniversary this morning, Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Phandu Skelemani gave a message of goodwill. He praised the institution for its unwavering commitment to academic excellence. He urged the university to emphasise knowledge sharing strategies grounded in research more.

The University received praise from the Hon. Dr. Douglas Letsholathebe, Minister of Education and Skills Development and a former student there. The large number of applications received from prospective students across the nation, he observed, is proof of the University’s reputation being enhanced by its excellent practises. He claimed that over 6,000 new undergrad students had enrolled for the current academic year, which is a staggering number. He asserted that this demonstrates how the university still has a place in society.

Professor David Norris, vice chancellor of the University of Botswana, commended all parties involved for using the Francistown Centre for Continuing Education, especially the residents of Francistown and the surrounding areas. Chapson Jabavu Butale, a former cabinet minister, was posthumously honoured by the university. A prominent framed picture of an artwork was presented to the family in his honour as a sign of unity and in appreciation for the contribution he made during the university’s start-up phases. In the minds of Batswana, the slogan Motho le Motho Kgomo continues to rule.
