Absa Deputy CEO Peter Matlare deceased

The Absa Group Limited have announced the passing of its Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Peter Matlare yesterday. Absa Group is a parent to Absa Bank Botswana Limited. Mr. Matlare reportedly died on Sunday due to Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) related complications.

Absa Bank Botswana was launched in Botswana in February 2020. Previously it has for a long time operated under the name “Barclays Bank of Botswana”. Barclays Bank of Botswana Limited is a subsidiary of Barclays Bank Plc. Barclays Bank PLC commenced operations in Botswana in 1950. In 1975 the bank was incorporated locally, as Barclays Bank of Botswana Limited. In February 2020 the bank adopted it’s parent bank name and changed from Barclays Bank of Botswana to Absa Bank Botswana.

Dying at the age of sixty (60) years, Matlare was appointed to be the deputy CEO of the group and Chief Executive for Absa Regional Operations (ARO) on the 1st of August 2016, also gaining a position of an executive director, a position he held by the time he met his demise. Before that appointment, Matlare served as an independent non-executive director of Absa Group since December 2011.

Mr. Matlare previously occupied the position of Chief Executive Officer & Executive Director at Johannesburg-listed Tiger Brands Limited, Chief Executive Officer of South African Broadcasting Corporation, Executive Director-Commercial at Vodacom SA, Chief Strategy & Business Development Officer at Vodacom Group Ltd. and Chairman of National Association of Broadcasters. Before that Mr. Matlare served as the Chief Strategy and Business Development Officer of Vodacom Group Limited.

Education-wise Matlare attended University of York at Canada for his Master’s Degree and has a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the same University of York, Canada.

Away from business and education, Peter Matlare was a family man, he leaves behind a wife and three (3) daughters.
