Botswana infrastructure development

Basic right to shelter has improved with each passing decade in the country. From the years of grass and wood houses known as Mogoafatshe as temporary shelter for the hunters and gatherers. Prior to independence and few years following independence traditional architecture of thatch roofing and clay walls was dominant.

The traditional architecture stretched country wide with thatching and lekgapho (decorations) specific to the different districts.

Following attainment of independence, more citizens getting exposed to education and earning an income thereafter, the people of Botswana progressed to build more strong houses paving way for houses with corrugated metal roofing and clay brick. This developments introduced an era of house designs, from the circular structure houses had, to box like structures that vary in sizes.

This was the beginning of a new era. Today we have houses built using cement bricks, not only so but the use of metal in construction has enabled the country to have new designs that are more modernized, rigid and last forever (such housing examples are high rise apartments).

The nation is now also equipped with state departments and parastatals that are responsible for housing developments such as Department of Planning and Botswana Housing Corporation, to ensure habitual and conducive shelter.
