PS meets with senior management of Institute of health science

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MESD), Ms. Miriam B. Maroba, yesterday met with the senior management of the Department of Institute of Health Sciences (DIHS) who now after the rationalization of Ministries in April finds itself at MESD.

Ms. Maroba told them she is aware of the challenges faced by the Department and its institutions, which include among others backlog maintenance of facilities, structural gaps in the establishment register, shortage of staff and lack of training and progression of some employees. She went on to assure the management that strides have been made and are in place to address these issues to enhance efficiency in service delivery. PS further assured the department of the Ministry’s unyielding support and implored them to do more with the limited resources they have.

Ms Maroba highlighted that MESD is a huge ministry with an even huge mandate of delivering human capital and encouraged the management to do their part and deliver effectively for the success of the Ministry and the country.
Representing Principals of all Institute of Health Sciences, Ms Tebogo Morolong, Principal of Serowe IHS, acknowledged the magnitude of the Ministry and appreciated the PS’s commitment to addressing the over-standing challenges faced by the Institutions. Ms Morolong further requested for Institutions of Health Sciences to be provided with funds for research as officers are constrained because of funding. She committed that they will continue to deliver effectively and engage the Ministry as needed.

The now amalgamated MESD constitutes of all the education sub-sectors from basic education, skills development and tertiary levels. A move that is meant to harmonize and ensure that issues of human capital are dealt with in a systematic manner. The Ministry now composes of 765 Primary Schools, 209 Junior Secondary School, 34 Senior Secondary Schools, 10 Parastatals, 8 Technical and Vocational Education (TVET), 32 Brigades, 4 Colleges of Education, 6 Institute of Health Sciences, 1 TVET assessment institution-Madirelo Training and Testing Centre, 2 Training Institutions, 1 Roads Training Centre and 1 Wildlife Training Institute. And an establishment of close to 50 000 staff members and over 700 000 learners across all level making it one of the biggest Ministries in the country.
