BDP deny efforts to unseat Majaga

The Patriot on Sunday newspaper has reported that “The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is considering having a new candidate -Youth chairman Mompati Seitiso, for the upcoming 2024 general elections in the Nata-Gweta constituency

An article by Bakang Tiro revealed that Seitiso is expected to run against incumbent MP Polson Majaga in the BDP 2023 primaries. The paper further suggested that ‘the BDP leadership is preparing for a new dawn in Nata-Gweta as Majaga seems to have fallen out of favour with the party leadership.”

In response to an article, which clearly stated that Seitiso denied being endorsed by the party leadership, the BDP Communications department wrote;

“We have noted with shock a newspaper article appearing on The Patriot on Sunday dated August 15, 2021. titled “BDP finds Majaga challenger.. The article suggests that the Botswana Democratic party (BDP) has found an individual to challenge the Nata/Gweta Member of Parliament Mr. Polson Majaga for the BDP primary elections in preparation for the 2024 general elections. We are concerned about this statement as It is false. The Public and Democrats are therefore advised to ignore it and treat it as propaganda aimed at trying to divide Democrats in the Nata-Gweta constituency and Botswana at large.
The BDP has set out procedures and processes: rules & regulations that outline how party members can express their interests to stand for any office, be it parliament or council. The process as outlined in the party primary elections guidelines is based on democratic principles where all members in good standing who wish to contest are allowed and vetted through the structures accordingly. The BDP central committee oversees all intemal party procedures ensuring that party policy, rules & regulations and the constitution are upheld to the letter. The processes thus ensure that fairness reigns supreme and that no one receives special treatment at the time of party primary elections.”

The outspoken legislator, Polson Majaga has previously been suspended by the BDP for the defilement case he had. The Party faced pressure from the public, mostly gender and child rights organizations.
