Update on National Diarrhoea outbreak

The Ministry of Health informs members of the public that it is currently experiencing Diarrhoeal illnesses across the country, affecting mainly children below the age of five (5). More than 330 cases of Diarrhoea with dehydration have been recorded since 3 July 2022. Ngami, Okavango, Greater Francistown and recently Ghanzi DHMTs, have been the most affected.

In view of this development, all public health facilities are on high alert to detect and provide the necessary health services for management of these Diarrhoeal illnesses. Further, the ministry has also strengthened surveillance, prevention and response mechanisms to all DHMTs across the country. The necessary resources such as equipment and medical formulas, are being availed to the DHMTs in order to alleviate the situation. Health care providers are also being capacitated to deal with the outbreak.

The ministry is also engaging communities and other stakeholders for augmentation of efforts and to ensure that the situation does not slip out of control.

Members of the public are therefore, advised to immediately visit the nearest health facility, when they experience any unusual symptoms. They should also maintain high standards of hygiene, like keeping their environment clean and regularly washing their hands with clean water and soap.
