Ambassador or loser-at-large?

Mr. Elias Mpedi Magosi has been appointed as the Acting Ambassador-at-large, a position which most of Batswana have never heard of until the appointment. This move have sparked a controversy on whether the president is getting rid of him or not.

Some have always been of the view that the reason why the President is putting so much effort and resources in Magosi’s campaign for Southern African Development Community (SADC) Executive Secretary (ES) is because he wants to get rid of him.

“DEAR Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi. The problem is you don’t listen to me. You remember when I wrote this in 2020 July? You are now stuck with 2 Magosi boys who control you. You can’t fire them. Peter and Elias Magosi. They have made you a child. A small child. Peter Magosi’s contract is ending, you have no choice but to renew it or also make him DIS ambassador at large working from his cattle post.” Daniel Kenosi wrote.

On the other hand, some are of the view that fielding Magosi for SADC ES is a strategic move by President Masisi to plant his pawn in SADC so that he won’t be called out for his bad deeds.

“Many in the opposition are of the view that Magosi is one of those that are mismanaging the country and he may be used to further frustrate the democratic process in Botswana if he becomes SADC ES. In short, SADC will not become a block to look towards for help if the election 2024 is rigged because Masisi will have his guy at the helm.” Lawrence Ookeditse, BPF Publicity Secretary commented.

However, President Masisi denied that he is trying to get rid of Elias Magosi by redeploying him, “Rre Magosi will remain in his position as Permanent Secretary to the President, he has been appointed on temporary to the position of Ambassador at Large as a preparatory work for the position of SADC Executive Secretary, we assume that will happen, we want to get him ready, he will be traveling a lot” he said.
