The Minister of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs- Mrs. Annah Mokgethi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Gaborone Bonnington North, has encouraged females and the nation at large to support women and girls in quest for equality in leadership.

Speaking this morning in commemoration of international women’s day which is held every year on the 8th of March, Mokgethi emphasized that developing a country, especially in a pandemic, without women would be a very difficult task.

“To achieve gender equality in COVID-19 situation, we need to give women a chance and encourage them to have a strong role in leadership. I would like to point out that the status of women in leadership is worrisome, especially on; politics, leadership, abuse. In that regard, we need to collaborate as women and men to change this situation. Let us realize that without women, it would be difficult to achieve our goals of permanent developments.

The Minister says even though progress has been made in regards to gender equality, there is still a long way to go in order to achieve equality in line with Global Gender Gap Report of 2020.

“Gender equality together with strengthening women and children; is the fifth pillar of the international permanent development plan. As a member of the international community, Botswana is expected to ensure that women and men have equal share in developments by the year 2030” Mokgethi revealed.

Under this year’s theme “????? ?? ??????????; ????????? ?? ????? ?????? ?? ??? ?????-?? ?????” Mokgethi urged the nation to unite to progress towards vision 2036 by: honoring women icons who partook in leadership; encouraging women to lead in issues of gender equality; showing newcomers the right way to change the situation women and girls find themselves in.
