Central Region, Botswana — This morning, the Hon. Assistant Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Mr. Justine Hunyepa, visited Lotsane Senior Secondary School as part of the Ministry’s continued efforts to monitor and support schools across the country. The visit was aimed at assessing how the institution is managing educational demands and to foster open dialogue with staff and students about the challenges they face.
During an in-depth meeting with the school management, several urgent concerns were brought to the Assistant Minister’s attention. One of the most pressing issues discussed was the school’s ongoing struggle with poor internet connectivity. Teachers and administrators stressed that the lack of reliable internet access continues to obstruct the school’s transition to digital learning, limiting both teaching innovation and student access to educational resources.
The administration also voiced frustration over the extended suspension of extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and creative programs. School leaders noted that these activities are vital in helping students discover and develop their talents, build self-confidence, and acquire important soft skills such as teamwork and leadership.
In his remarks, Assistant Minister Hunyepa acknowledged the validity of the concerns raised and assured the school that the Ministry of Education is actively working on solutions. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure in schools and stressed that extracurricular programs would be restored as soon as feasible.
“Education is not only about academics,” Mr. Hunyepa said. “It is about nurturing well-rounded individuals. While we work on resolving these issues, I encourage the school to also tap into local support networks—alumni, churches, and community organizations—to help fill some of the gaps.”
The visit was welcomed by staff and students, who appreciated the opportunity to directly engage with the Ministry on the ground. Teachers expressed hope that more visits of this nature would lead to quicker and more effective responses to the daily realities faced by schools.
As Botswana pushes forward with its education reforms, schools like Lotsane Senior Secondary remain central to achieving inclusive, high-quality learning. Today’s visit highlights the importance of continuous dialogue, community engagement, and decisive action in strengthening the country’s education system.
