Gaborone – The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) has taken a major step toward expanding its footprint in premium African markets by dispatching sample products to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), following the signing of a lucrative export agreement valued at P33 million.

According to an official statement from BMC, the samples include a selection of high-demand products such as Stewed Steak with Gravy, Corned Meat, and Pet Food. These products are expected to undergo final inspection and acceptance in the DRC, paving the way for the first full-scale delivery under the terms of the newly signed agreement.

“The arrival of these samples, which include Stewed Steak with Gravy, Corned Meat, and Pet Food, paves the way for the first full order under this long-term agreement. The DRC deal is a cornerstone of BMC’s broader strategy to expand into premium Africa markets,” reads the BMC statement.

The deal with the DRC marks a significant milestone in BMC’s ongoing transformation strategy, aimed at unlocking new revenue streams and reinforcing Botswana’s position as a leading exporter of quality beef products. The Commission’s strategic vision places emphasis on value-added products and regional diversification to reduce reliance on traditional export markets.

In addition to the DRC, BMC has set its sights on expanding further into the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and West Africa. Immediate target markets include Ghana, Angola, and Nigeria—countries with growing demand for high-quality protein and processed meat products.

This initiative aligns with Botswana’s national economic diversification goals and efforts to enhance agricultural exports. By entering into long-term supply agreements with emerging African economies, BMC aims to leverage its strong production standards and international certifications to compete effectively in the region.

The move also highlights the growing appeal of Botswana’s meat industry, which continues to be recognised for its traceability, disease-free status, and commitment to food safety.

As the DRC prepares to evaluate the initial shipment, industry stakeholders and trade partners will be watching closely. A successful roll-out could signal the beginning of a robust trade partnership between the two nations—bringing economic benefits to Botswana’s livestock sector and opening doors to new markets across the continent.
