Earlier today, the students of Bokamoso Junior Secondary School were treated to an inspiring and transformative experience through the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) Boot Camp — a day that left lasting impressions on young minds and hearts by igniting the spirit of Olympism.
The event was led by none other than Ms. Oreeditse Marakakgoro, the Chef de Mission for Team Botswana at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games. As a dedicated advocate for values-based education and a Champion of OVEP, Ms. Marakakgoro brought a unique energy and depth to the session that resonated powerfully with the students.
Throughout the day, learners were actively engaged in interactive discussions, team-building exercises, and storytelling sessions designed to promote the core Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship. Ms. Marakakgoro spoke passionately about how these values extend far beyond the track and field — they are life skills that help shape responsible, goal-oriented, and compassionate individuals.
“These values are not just for athletes,” she told the students. “They are for every young person with a dream, every student who wants to grow, lead, and make a difference.”
Her message struck a chord with many of the learners, who saw in her not just a leader in Botswana’s sports fraternity, but a relatable and empowering role model. Ms. Marakakgoro shared stories of perseverance, teamwork, and self-belief — key principles that mirror both Olympic ideals and the realities faced by many of today’s youth.
Teachers and school officials lauded the boot camp for its positive impact, noting the students’ enthusiasm and engagement throughout the day. The event not only encouraged physical activity and collaboration but also challenged students to think critically about how values like integrity, determination, and respect can guide them in their academic, social, and future professional lives.
The OVEP Boot Camp is part of a broader movement by the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) to instill Olympic principles in schools across the country. As Botswana prepares for the Paris 2024 Olympics, programmes like these serve to deepen the connection between sport, education, and youth empowerment.
By the end of the session, students were visibly inspired — many expressing a renewed sense of confidence, ambition, and purpose.
The legacy of the day is expected to endure long after the event, as students of Bokamoso Junior Secondary School carry forward the torch of Olympism — not just in sport, but in every aspect of their lives.
