Botswana and Japan continue to deepen their longstanding bilateral relationship through a renewed focus on water infrastructure development aimed at improving access to reliable water supplies. This commitment was reaffirmed when the Ambassador of Japan, Mr. SHINDO Yusuke, accompanied by his delegation, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of International Relations, Honourable Dr. Phenyo Butale. The meeting provided an opportunity to update the minister on the progress of the collaboration between the Government of Botswana and Toyota Tsusho Corporation regarding proposed water infrastructure projects. The discussions highlighted the shared commitment of both countries to promoting sustainable development through strategic partnerships and infrastructure investment. During the meeting, Ambassador SHINDO Yusuke explained that significant progress has been made since the strategic partnership between Botswana and Toyota Tsusho Corporation was signed during the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development, commonly known as TICAD9, in November 2025. The agreement created a framework for cooperation on projects designed to strengthen Botswana’s water infrastructure and improve service delivery. Since the signing of the partnership, Toyota Tsusho has been working closely with the Government of Botswana to identify projects that address some of the country’s most pressing water supply needs. According to the Ambassador, consultations were held with the Ministry of Water and Human Settlement as well as the Water Utilities Corporation to determine which projects would have the greatest impact. Following these discussions, the Francistown Water Project and the Kanye and Moshupa Water Project were identified as priority initiatives for detailed feasibility studies. These projects were selected because of their potential to improve water distribution and strengthen the reliability of water services in the affected communities. By focusing on areas where improvements are most needed, the partnership aims to deliver meaningful and lasting benefits for local communities.
The proposed projects will include the rehabilitation of existing water networks as well as the installation of new infrastructure to improve water supply systems.
