Kasane – Technical teams from Botswana and Zambia are currently engaged in intensive deliberations to advance the realization of a 430-kilometre railway line connecting the two neighbouring nations. The discussions come in the lead-up to a high-level bilateral meeting scheduled for Friday, 6th June 2025, in Kasane, Botswana.

The strategic meeting will be co-chaired by Botswana’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Hon. Noah S.L.M. Salakae, alongside Zambia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Hon. Frank Tayali. The event is expected to provide key political direction and oversight on one of Southern Africa’s most significant cross-border infrastructure initiatives.

The proposed railway line, currently at the feasibility stage, is envisioned to enhance regional rail connectivity and trade efficiency between Botswana and Zambia. Once completed, the railway corridor is expected to improve the movement of goods and people, reduce transportation costs, and boost access to international markets via regional ports.

Officials from both countries are examining the technical, financial, and environmental aspects of the project. The deliberations aim to ensure that the proposed infrastructure meets international standards and aligns with broader regional development objectives.

Speaking on the initiative, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in Botswana emphasized that the government is laser-focused on fast-tracking transformative infrastructure projects that will stimulate economic activity and enhance trade logistics.

“This railway link represents more than just physical infrastructure—it is a catalyst for regional integration, economic diversification, and sustainable development,” a ministry spokesperson said. “By improving rail connectivity, we are laying the groundwork for a more competitive and resilient transport sector.”

The railway line is expected to complement existing regional transport corridors, reinforcing Botswana’s and Zambia’s strategic roles in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). It will also contribute to unlocking investment opportunities in agriculture, mining, and manufacturing along the corridor.

The upcoming high-level meeting in Kasane is anticipated to solidify bilateral commitments, align implementation strategies, and chart a clear path forward for the realization of this landmark project.
