Botswana joined the global community in commemorating World Tourism Day 2025 under the theme “Tourism and sustainable transformation.” The celebration highlighted tourism’s role as a driver of economic growth, cultural pride, and sustainable development in the country.
Health and fitness enthusiasts gathered at Pylon Park near the Airport Junction Mall to participate in a City Tour Run. The event combined physical wellness with tourism promotion, allowing participants to experience the scenic charm and attractions of Gaborone. Organizers emphasized that such initiatives create awareness of the city’s potential as a destination for both locals and international visitors.

Acting Minister of Environment and Tourism, Major General (Rtd) Pius Mokgware, officiated the event and highlighted the strategic importance of tourism for Botswana. He stated that tourism is not just an industry but a critical opportunity for economic diversification. He also noted that the sector reflects the nation’s rich cultural heritage and promotes sustainable development across communities.
Hon. Mokgware described the City Tour Run as a platform that merges wellness and tourism. By encouraging residents and visitors to explore Gaborone on foot, the activity showcased the city’s landmarks, parks, and public spaces. It reinforced the message that sustainable tourism involves engaging communities, promoting health, and preserving cultural and environmental assets.
World Tourism Day 2025 in Botswana served a dual purpose: celebrating the country’s diverse offerings while promoting sustainable practices that support long-term growth in the tourism sector. The City Tour Run demonstrated how innovative initiatives can attract tourists and enhance the quality of life for local communities, strengthening Botswana’s reputation as a vibrant and culturally rich destination.
