Botswana’s hopes of defending its 4x400m relay crown at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou have taken a heavy blow following the sudden withdrawal of three star athletes—Letsile Tebogo, Bayapo Ndori, and Collen Kebinatshipi. The trio, who were pivotal in clinching gold at the 2024 World Relays in Nassau and silver at the Paris Olympics, pulled out of the squad just days before the event.
The announcement, made on Monday by Team Botswana’s head coach Justice Dipeba, has cast a shadow over the nation’s preparations for the championship scheduled for May 10–11 in China.
“These are athletes who not only have vast experience but are currently in top form,” Dipeba said. “Their absence alters the entire approach we had laid out for this campaign.”
Despite the setback, Dipeba is rallying behind the remaining team members, urging them to rise to the occasion. With Botswana set to host the next edition of the World Relays in 2026, the coach emphasized the importance of making a strong statement in Guangzhou.
“This year’s relays are about more than medals—they are a chance to show that Botswana is a force in global athletics,” he said. “While it’s a major blow to lose such experienced runners, I believe in the depth and potential of this team.”
Veteran sprinters Leungo Scotch and Bhekempilo Eppie are now expected to lead a relatively young and inexperienced squad. Coach Dipeba believes their leadership will be critical in boosting morale and helping the newcomers settle into the international spotlight.
“This is the time for others to step up,” Dipeba stressed. “They should not be intimidated by the absence of their teammates. Instead, they must see this as their moment to shine.”
He urged the athletes to trust in their abilities and remain mentally strong, drawing from past experiences where underdogs had risen to the challenge and delivered unexpected performances.
“I have seen athletes with limited exposure deliver when it mattered most,” Dipeba said. “This is not the end—it’s a new beginning for some of these runners.”
Botswana enters the Guangzhou meet as one of the most talked-about teams following its recent successes on the global stage. While expectations may have shifted, the team remains determined to prove that last year’s victories were no accident.
With the world watching and pressure mounting, all eyes will be on Botswana’s revamped squad to see whether they can rise above adversity and deliver yet another proud moment for the nation.
