In a major step toward sustainable energy and environmental responsibility, Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) and Debswana have signed a Memorandum of Agreement that will see Debswana acquire renewable energy from BPC. The signing, which took place on Wednesday, marks a significant milestone in Botswana’s transition to a greener and more sustainable future.
The agreement represents a shared commitment between the two institutions to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the shift to cleaner energy sources. With this collaboration, Debswana will integrate renewable energy into its operations—supporting its long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality.
Debswana Managing Director, Mr. Andrew Motsomi, described the agreement as a “welcome development,” celebrating it as the realization of a long-held vision. “What was once a dream is now a reality,” he said, highlighting the importance of this move in aligning Debswana’s business operations with environmental sustainability.
Mr. Motsomi emphasized that Debswana aims to be carbon neutral by 2030, and this partnership with BPC is a crucial step toward that goal. By sourcing renewable energy, Debswana plans to eliminate harmful emissions from its mining and processing activities—an ambitious but necessary transition in the global fight against climate change.
“We are here to take a big step in greening our diamonds,” Mr. Motsomi said, reinforcing the company’s commitment to producing diamonds that are not only ethically sourced but also environmentally responsible. He noted that this initiative is part of Debswana’s broader promise to do business in a way that safeguards the planet for future generations.
The Botswana Power Corporation echoed these sentiments, expressing confidence in the country’s growing renewable energy sector and the role such partnerships will play in meeting national and global sustainability goals.
As the global demand for environmentally conscious products grows, Botswana’s mining sector is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable practices. The BPC-Debswana agreement not only strengthens Botswana’s green energy agenda but also sets an example for responsible business in the mining industry.
This collaboration signals a future where Botswana’s natural resources—like diamonds—shine not just for their beauty, but for the clean, responsible energy that powers their journey from mine to market.
