The Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) is hosting a five-day national workshop to develop the Botswana Senior Secondary Education (BSSE) qualification. This initiative aims to enhance the relevance, recognition, and global competitiveness of the country’s senior secondary education system. By bringing together key stakeholders, the workshop seeks to ensure that Botswana’s qualifications meet national priorities while aligning with international education standards. The program underscores BQA’s commitment to delivering high-quality, credible qualifications that prepare learners for the demands of higher education, training, and the modern workforce.

The workshop convenes education experts, curriculum specialists, and technical practitioners to collaboratively design the BSSE qualification. The development process is guided by the National Credit and Qualifications Framework (NCQF), Vision 2036, the Education and Training Sector Strategic Plan, and national skills priorities identified by the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC). Participants are engaged in structured technical sessions and collaborative group work to define learning outcomes, assessment approaches, and credit structures. The process ensures the qualification reflects Botswana’s strategic education goals while addressing the evolving needs of learners.

A key focus of the qualification design is the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and other 21st-century skills. Regional and international benchmarking is also being conducted to ensure the BSSE qualification meets global standards. This approach guarantees that learners are equipped with skills that are both nationally relevant and internationally recognized, supporting their transition to higher education or employment. The design emphasizes practical, future-focused competencies essential for success in a rapidly changing global economy.

At the conclusion of the workshop, a draft BSSE qualification will be produced. This draft will undergo stakeholder consultation, validation, and registration on the NCQF. This process ensures the qualification is quality-assured, aligned with national priorities, and recognized internationally. BQA’s rigorous development and approval process demonstrates the authority’s commitment to maintaining public confidence in Botswana’s education system. It also provides learners with clear, competitive pathways for further study and career progression.

Beyond the creation of a new certificate, the BSSE qualification represents a strategic effort to strengthen Botswana’s education system. By modernizing senior secondary education, the initiative supports fair, transparent, and globally competitive learning outcomes. Through this workshop and ongoing leadership in qualification development, BQA is positioning Botswana’s learners to succeed in a dynamic, globalized economy while reinforcing the country’s commitment to high-quality education.
