Gaborone – In a major boost to Botswana’s efforts to combat childhood cancer, the Ministry of Health today received critical cancer medication valued at over P500,000. The donation was made possible through a groundbreaking partnership involving the Government of Cyprus and the Elpida Foundation, marking a significant milestone in global health cooperation.
The essential medical supplies were officially handed over at Princess Marina Hospital, where Dr. Tshepo Machacha, Hospital Superintendent, received them on behalf of the Ministry of Health. The donation was presented by representatives of the Ministry of Health of Cyprus and the Elpida Foundation, a respected international organization dedicated to supporting children with cancer.
This important contribution is the result of coordinated collaboration between the Government of Botswana—represented by the Ministry of Health, the Office of the President, and the Botswana-Baylor Children’s Clinical Centre of Excellence—and their counterparts in Cyprus, including the Ministry of Health, the Office of the President of Cyprus, and the Elpida Foundation.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Dr. Machacha expressed deep appreciation for the donation, emphasizing its impact on the lives of young patients and their families.
“This generous support will strengthen our capacity to provide timely and effective treatment to children living with cancer in Botswana,” he said. “It is a reminder of what can be achieved through international solidarity and shared commitment to healthcare.”
The medication will directly support pediatric oncology services at Princess Marina Hospital and other treatment centres in the country, helping to close critical gaps in access to cancer care for children.
Botswana’s Ministry of Health has been intensifying efforts to enhance oncology services, with a focus on early diagnosis, timely treatment, and comprehensive care. This latest donation not only delivers urgently needed medication but also symbolizes a broader commitment to saving lives through global partnerships.
Representatives from Cyprus reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration with Botswana in health and humanitarian initiatives. The Elpida Foundation, which has supported cancer programs across several countries, praised Botswana’s dedication to improving pediatric cancer outcomes and pledged ongoing support.
Today’s handover marks a new chapter in Botswana’s journey toward universal access to specialized medical care and highlights the powerful role of international cooperation in addressing global health challenges.
