Minister for State President Mr. Moeti Mohwasa has welcomed Russia’s recent offer to train young Botswana diplomats in Moscow in 2026, describing it as a powerful gesture of enduring friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Mr. Mohwasa made these remarks during the annual Russia Day celebrations held on June 12, 2025. Speaking at the event, he expressed Botswana’s gratitude for Russia’s continued support across key sectors such as education, health, engineering, military training, and diplomacy.

“This offer to train our young diplomats is a clear indication of the strength of our partnership and Russia’s commitment to investing in Botswana’s future,” Mr. Mohwasa said. “We deeply appreciate the support Russia has provided over the years, and we look forward to building on this relationship in the years to come.”

The announcement comes at a time when global diplomatic collaboration is increasingly vital. The proposed training will equip Botswana’s next generation of diplomats with valuable international experience and deepen their understanding of global affairs.

Russian Ambassador to Botswana, Andrey Kemarskiy, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the 55-year history of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He reaffirmed Russia’s intention to strengthen cooperation in critical sectors including energy, mining, healthcare, and higher education.

“Botswana and Russia have shared a respectful and productive relationship for over five decades,” Ambassador Kemarskiy noted. “We are committed to expanding our collaboration and creating new opportunities for both our nations.”

The planned diplomatic training is expected to form part of a broader strategic initiative aimed at enhancing capacity building and international exchange. It also symbolizes a mutual desire to maintain strong bilateral ties that contribute meaningfully to regional and global development.

As Botswana continues to prioritise skills development and international engagement, this move by Russia represents a promising step toward nurturing globally competitive leaders and reinforcing Botswana’s role on the world stage.
