As part of the Botswana Police Service (BPS) leadership’s hands-on approach, Deputy Commissioner Support Services, Solomon Mantswe, recently paid a visit to the Gope Special Support Group (SSG) Base Camp located within the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR). The visit aimed to engage directly with officers deployed in this remote area, fostering better understanding between ground operatives and senior leadership.

This initiative reflects a growing commitment within the BPS to promote active interaction between the executive team and officers on the frontlines, allowing leaders to appreciate the challenges and realities faced by those protecting Botswana’s vast wilderness.

During the visit, Deputy Commissioner Mantswe commended the officers for their dedication in curbing poaching activities despite numerous operational challenges. “Their efforts have been vital in preserving our wildlife heritage, and their resilience is commendable,” he said.

Sergeant Gobotlhale Moloi, Base Commander at Gope, expressed gratitude for the visit, explaining that it provided a much-needed morale boost for the team. He emphasized that the unit’s responsibilities extend beyond anti-poaching, as they also provide policing services to nearby settlements, ensuring safety and security for local communities.

In addition to engaging with officers, Deputy Commissioner Mantswe and his delegation toured the Ghaghoo Mine as well as the power and water supply facilities that support the Gope Base Camp’s daily operations. The reliable provision of water and electricity is crucial for sustaining the Base Camp’s functionality in the remote game reserve.

Further visits to Matswere, Xade, and Tsetseng Base Camps rounded out the tour, reinforcing leadership’s commitment to maintaining close contact with officers and ensuring operational needs are met across all sites.

This hands-on leadership approach signals Botswana Police Service’s ongoing dedication to strengthening its fight against poaching and enhancing security services in remote areas, ultimately supporting the country’s conservation and community safety goals.
