Butale faces uncertain future at BPF

While he was initially accused of sexual misconduct, Biggie Ganda Butale, the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) President faces uncertain future with the party he supposedly leads.

Among other charges, he is accused of causing divisions among the party and disrespecting the party patron. According to the letter addressed to Butale stating his ”charges of misconduct”, it is mentioned, “It is reported against you that on the 15 of May 2021 you convened meeting aimed at paralyzing, causing division and breaking up Botswana Patriotic Front Party at a farm near Mahalapye, a farm: suspected to belong to One Molebatsi who is a BDP member”

At the said meeting, Butale is accused to have told the attendees to go their former parties. It is further alleged that at the same meeting Butale disclosed his intentions to break up and dissolve the BPF party. It is said that the alleged actions are in contravention with Clause 6.1.5 of the Botswana Patriotic Front Party Costitution.

“On the 15th May 2021 in a meeting you convened at a farm near Mahalapye you are alleged to have labeled The Party Patron a Dictator, Contravening Clause 6.1.3 of the Botswana Patriotic Front Constitution. You are also alleged to have gone to as far as media houses and further besmirched the Party name by saying you are being set up and that people want to remove you because you are not a Mongwato.” the letter proclaimed.

In addition to attempting to break up and dissolve the BPF, as well as calling the party patron- Former President His Excellency Lt Gen. Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama a dictator, it is counted as a misconduct that Butale called the BPF National Executive Committee (NEC) as a “KANGAROO COURT”, in the same meeting Butale made another “abomination” by calling Khama a dictator.

If found guilty of the charges levelled against him, it is said that Butale will be faced with a “disciplinary action”. “Accordingly, you are hereby required to respond in writing to this allegations within 7 days of the receipt of this letter. Should you fail to submit your explanations as required, it will be presumed that you admit the charges and have no explanation to offer and the matter will be dealt with accordingly.” the letter added.
