CPA Central Africa Regional Representative Hon. Raymond Nkhata Visits Botswana’s National Assembly

Gaborone, Botswana – The Regional Representative of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Central Africa Sub-Region, Hon. Raymond Chatima Nkhata, MP, paid a courtesy call on the Acting Speaker of the National Assembly of Botswana, Hon. Helen P. Manyeneng, on Monday, 6 May 2025, as part of his official visit to engage with the CPA Botswana Branch.

Hon. Manyeneng warmly received Hon. Nkhata, who hails from Malawi, and offered a cordial introduction to the operations of the 13th Parliament of Botswana. During their meeting at the National Assembly Chambers, she highlighted Botswana’s continued commitment to democratic governance, regional collaboration, and strengthening parliamentary diplomacy within the Commonwealth.

Strengthening Parliamentary Ties Across the Region

The visit by Hon. Nkhata, who represents the CPA Central Africa Sub-Region, is part of a wider engagement running from 4 to 8 May 2025, aimed at reinforcing ties between member branches and promoting good parliamentary practices. His presence in Botswana underscores the CPA’s mission to advance democracy, accountability, and development through parliamentary cooperation.

In his remarks, Hon. Nkhata expressed sincere gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by the National Assembly and praised Botswana’s consistent participation in CPA activities. “Botswana has always been a respected member of the CPA and a model for democratic values in the region,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of inter-branch cooperation in addressing regional challenges through shared learning and legislative support.

Spotlight on the 13th Parliament

Hon. Manyeneng provided an overview of the 13th Parliament’s composition and legislative priorities. She noted that the Parliament continues to focus on strengthening citizen engagement, economic reform, and inclusive development, while aligning with Commonwealth principles.

The discussions between the two parliamentary leaders touched on mutual areas of interest, including capacity building for Members of Parliament, gender equality in political representation, and the integration of technology in legislative processes.

Promoting the CPA’s Vision in Central Africa

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association plays a key role in connecting parliaments across regions, offering platforms for dialogue, training, and innovation in governance. Hon.
