There has been talks of a brewing factionalism at the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), the power houses being the party president Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, and BDP Secretary General, Mpho Balopi.
It looks like the cold war period is now over, and the real action has begun as some of Balopi’s loyalists are getting suspension letters. According to the sources at Tsholetsa House, more than ten (10) councillors who aligned themselves with Balopi are due for suspension from the BDP.
Yesterday Councillor Collen Mochotlhi’s suspension letter was trending on social media. It has been confirmed that Lenganeng Ward councillor suspension was prepared the same time with the other three (3). The three (3); Honourable Slumber Mokgosi, Honourable Seilatsatsi Kgokong, and Honourable Molemisi Motsewabathata suspension letters are also said to be ready, written and signed by President Masisi.
According to the suspension letter directed to Honourable Collen Mochotlhi, the Councillor is being suspended for allegedly committing the following;
- Behaving in a grossly disorderly and unruly manner that might put the Party name into disrepute contrary to General Code of Conduct number 5.
- Behaving in a manner calculated to bring the Party name into disrepute contrary to General Code of Conduct of the Party number 11.
- Contemptuous behaviour towards Party leadership and other members.
“In exercise of the powers conferred on me by Article 34.1.6 and having determined that this is one of the exceptional circumstances in which I should exercise those powers, I hereby suspend you with immediate effect as a member of the Party for a period of sixty (60) days pending investigation into the above allegations and or disciplinary action in light of the complaints laid against you. For the entire period of your suspension. you shall cease to enjoy your rights and privileges as a member of the Party as outlined in article 13 of the BDP Constitution” Masisi wrote.
