“Kaunda leaves behind a rich legacy” – Mogae

“President Kaunda’s contribution to the liberation struggle of our sub-region, as a frontline statesman was invaluable. He dedicated his own life and availed his government for the prosperity of our Southern African region, during our formative days. It is in no small measure that we pay a special tribute to President Kaunda for helping shape the development trajectory of newly independent nations such as our own. Together with his peers at the time, they founded and nurtured the regional economic community – SADC – in which we take pride.” Former President, His Excellency Dr. Festus Gontebanye Mogae said on condolences message.

Mogae, who was the Head of State for Botswana from 1998 to 2008 says he had the pleasure of working with Dr. Kenneth Kaunda during the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. By that time Kaunda was already the Former President of Zambia.

Mogae showered Kaunda with praises for all the good works he has done, not only for Zambia, but Southern Africa, and the continent at large. He said KK, as he was affectionately known, leaves behind a rich legacy which must be carried forward.

For his part, Former President His Excellency Lt. Gen. Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama also shared the same sentiments. Khama says indeed Kaunda lived not only for Zambia, but for the region, and the entire continent. His passing, Khama says, has left Africa as a whole in tears as orphans. Khama says Kaunda was a freedom fighter, a liberator whose legacy will live on.

“A long journey which must also be celebrated that included amongst others, the successful struggle for independence and majority rule, self determination and equality, commitment dedicated to the upliftment of the people of Africa, are legacies that will be remembered by all.” Khama suggested.
