The Acting Minister for State President, Honorable Maipelo Mophuting, officially opened the 2nd Annual Botswana Security and Fire Summit & Expo 2025 this morning at Boipuso Hall in Gaborone. Held under the theme “Re-Imagine, Re-Focus, Re-Start,” the summit gathered key stakeholders in the security sector to exchange ideas on innovation, resilience, and future readiness in national safety.

In her keynote address, Minister Mophuting underscored the importance of peace and security in realising the country’s long-term development goals, particularly Vision 2036. She stressed that security is not a luxury or privilege but a fundamental public good that must be accessible to all citizens.

“Our journey to achieving Vision 2036 demands a stable and secure environment. Without peace and safety, all efforts toward economic growth and social development are compromised,” she said.

During the address, Mophuting announced the government’s support for the proposed Botswana Security Excellence Academy—an initiative that aims to professionalise the security industry and expand access to security careers through scholarships and hands-on training. The academy is expected to play a pivotal role in preparing Botswana’s youth for meaningful participation in national and international security efforts.

“The academy will ensure that opportunities in the security field are not limited to a select few, but opened up to all who qualify, regardless of background,” she stated.

This year’s summit attracted a wide range of participants, including policymakers, private security companies, emergency services, defence experts, and representatives from academia. Topics covered included advancements in surveillance technology, cyber security threats, emergency response preparedness, and the importance of inter-agency collaboration.

The annual event continues to grow in significance as it becomes a platform for shaping the future of Botswana’s security landscape. By fostering dialogue and partnerships across sectors, the summit aims to build a secure, inclusive, and resilient Botswana for all.
