The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education recently took part in the official opening of the Special Olympics National Games. The event also served to commemorate people living with disabilities. The three-day competition featured athletics and ball-sports, bringing together learners and children with disabilities from the South, Kweneng South-Central, Kgalagadi, and North regions.

Athletes competed on track and field events, as well as in ball-sports, showcasing talent and determination. Selectors used the games to identify athletes who will represent Botswana in the National Special Olympics Team. The event provided a platform for children with disabilities to demonstrate skills and gain recognition at a national level.

Special Olympics Botswana designed the initiative to promote inclusivity in sport. Its core mission is to create opportunities for all learners, regardless of ability, to participate in structured, competitive sports. By engaging children from multiple regions, the games encourage both development and social integration.

The Ministry emphasized its continued support for inclusive programs. Officials highlighted that initiatives like the Special Olympics help build confidence, teamwork, and athletic skills while promoting equal access to sporting opportunities.

The National Games signal Botswana’s commitment to supporting children with disabilities and fostering a culture of inclusion through sport.
