The Ministry of Water and Settlement today convened a high-level stakeholder forum focused on the Bonno National Housing Programme, signaling a major step forward in Botswana’s efforts to provide accessible and affordable housing. The forum brought together key players in the housing and development sector to assess progress, align strategies, and reinforce partnerships for the successful rollout of the ambitious initiative.
Speaking during the forum, Minister Onneetse Ramogapi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the national housing shortage through strategic collaboration and policy alignment. He noted that the Bonno Housing Programme is deeply anchored in Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
“Our vision is clear — to provide decent and affordable housing for all citizens. The Bonno Programme is not just a construction project; it is a national agenda that reflects our commitment to inclusive development,” said Minister Ramogapi.

The Minister announced that the government has set a target to deliver 100,000 housing units over the next three years. A major milestone will be reached in June 2025 when 61,000 housing units are officially launched in Palapye. These housing projects will be spread across various districts, ensuring equitable development and addressing regional housing needs.
In a strong assurance to the public, Minister Ramogapi emphasized that the houses will be priced affordably and will cater to all demographics, including civil servants currently living in staff-provided accommodations.
He further encouraged public sector officers to actively support the ruling party’s development agenda and to work diligently in eliminating bureaucratic hurdles that could delay project implementation.
“The time for red tape is over. We need urgency, efficiency, and collective ownership of this initiative to make it a success. This programme is not only a key deliverable of the party manifesto, but a lifeline for thousands of Batswana,” he said.
The stakeholder forum is expected to foster stronger cooperation among government departments, private developers, and financial institutions, with a shared goal of delivering housing solutions that uplift communities and stimulate economic growth.
