President Advocate Duma Boko recently held a press conference to update the media on his recent international visits to the United States, Hungary, and Angola. His message was clear: Botswana is not merely attending global events as observers but actively presenting its strengths—especially its world-renowned diamond sector—with a vision to shape the nation’s future.
“We went to the United States, Hungary, and Angola not as observers, we went there to present Botswana’s diamonds. Our aim is to shape our country’s future,” President Boko said. Emphasizing Botswana’s ambition to diversify its tourism appeal, he stated, “Tourists will start coming to Botswana not only for wildlife but also to explore our mines. This goes beyond marketing and represents growth as we aim to instill confidence in prospective investors.”
Addressing concerns about the rising presence of synthetic diamonds in the global market, President Boko reassured that Botswana is taking proactive measures to protect the integrity of its natural diamond industry. “They claim synthetic diamonds will dominate the market; however, that won’t happen as we are taking proactive measures to prevent it. There’s no way that fake diamonds will outshine natural ones,” he asserted confidently.
President Boko also highlighted efforts to strengthen educational and cultural ties with Hungary. “We want to increase the number of Hungarian scholarships for Botswana students from 15 to 50. We presently have only 15 students in Hungary. Our nation can gain much from countries such as Hungary, as Hungarians are eager to collaborate effectively with us,” he explained.
This press briefing reflects Botswana’s strategic approach to international relations, focusing on economic growth, education, and safeguarding national assets. With an eye on the future, President Boko’s vision aims to place Botswana prominently on the global stage while ensuring sustainable development at home.
