The Ministry of International Relations has announced the appointment of Mr. Charles Masole as Botswana’s new Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) in New York, following a directive by President Advocate Duma Boko.
Ambassador Masole officially presented his credentials to the United Nations Secretary-General, His Excellency Mr. António Guterres, on 5th June 2025 during a ceremony held at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA.
A highly respected career diplomat, Ambassador Masole brings with him over twenty-six years of dedicated service in Botswana’s Foreign Service. His extensive diplomatic experience and leadership in advancing Botswana’s foreign policy objectives make him exceptionally well-suited for this prestigious role.
Throughout his career, Ambassador Masole has held several key positions. He previously served as Botswana’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, where he played an integral role in promoting Botswana’s human rights agenda. Notably, he led Botswana’s Human Rights team of experts during the country’s membership on the UN Human Rights Council from 2012 to 2017, helping to shape critical discussions and policies on human rights at the global level.
Ambassador Masole also played a pivotal role in expanding Botswana’s diplomatic presence by contributing to the establishment of the country’s diplomatic missions in both Kenya and Australia. His leadership has further been demonstrated through his recent position as Director of the Department of Europe and the Americas at the Ministry’s headquarters. Prior to this, he directed the Department of Africa and the Middle East, where he was instrumental in facilitating Botswana’s Chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security between August 2020 and August 2021. This tenure allowed Botswana to make meaningful contributions to regional peace, security, and democratic consolidation.
Additionally, Ambassador Masole served as Commissioner on the Presidential Commission of Inquiry on Livestock Rustling, reflecting his versatility and commitment to national service.
As Botswana’s new envoy to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Masole is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the country’s engagement within the UN system. His responsibilities will include advocating for Botswana’s positions on key global issues, supporting multilateralism, and contributing to the advancement of the global development agenda.
Ambassador Masole succeeds Ambassador Dr. Gladys Mokhawa, who recently completed her distinguished term as Botswana’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
With Ambassador Masole’s appointment, Botswana reaffirms its strong commitment to active participation in international diplomacy and multilateral cooperation, promoting peace, development, and human rights on the global stage.
