The Matsiloje Tati Nickel Mine is set to officially reopen next month, bringing a wave of optimism and economic revival to the region. The reopening is expected to create over 400 direct job opportunities and stimulate growth in several supporting sectors, marking a major step forward in Botswana’s efforts to drive inclusive and sustainable economic development.
Speaking about the development, the Mayor of Francistown, Gaone Majere, expressed strong confidence in the positive impact the mine’s revival will have on both the local and national economy. She described the reopening as a turning point for the region, which has long awaited the reactivation of mining operations since the mine’s abrupt closure in 2016.
“The reopening of Matsiloje Tati Nickel Mine is a welcome development. It will not only provide employment to hundreds of people but also breathe new life into the local economy,” said Mayor Majere.
The mine, previously a key player in Botswana’s mining industry, is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s GDP through increased mineral exports and the stimulation of ancillary industries. The revival comes at a time when the government is placing a strong emphasis on mining as a catalyst for broader economic diversification.
Mayor Majere also highlighted that the economic benefits of the mine’s reopening would extend beyond just job creation. Sectors such as transportation, retail, housing, and small business services are all anticipated to experience renewed activity and growth as a result of increased demand driven by mining operations.
“There are many other sectors that will benefit from the reopening of the mine. Local suppliers, service providers, and entrepreneurs will all find opportunities to grow as mining resumes,” she added.
The return of operations at Matsiloje signals renewed investor confidence in Botswana’s mining sector and aligns with the country’s strategy to harness its natural resources for long-term national development. With the creation of over 400 jobs and ripple effects throughout the economy, the reopening is expected to have a lasting and transformative impact on Francistown and surrounding communities.
