Sir Neil Isaac Scholarship in Environmental Science at the University of Canterbury

Brief description:

The University of Canterbury is inviting students who wish to undergo research on the environment and undertake Master’s or PhD studies at the University of Canterbury, to apply for the Sir Neil Isaac Scholarship in Environmental Science. The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust set this scholarship in memory of Sir Neil Isaac, who had a lifelong enthusiasm for enhancing relationships between people and the environment.

The recipient must lodge with the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust a copy of any publication arising from the work undertaken during the tenure of the scholarship, and must give due recognition to the donors in any such publication.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The scholarship award is $20,000 per annum, for a period of 2 to 3 years.

Recipients studying for a Master’s degree may hold the scholarship during both Part I and Part II of their degree programme. The scholarship will be available for the period necessary for a student to complete 2.00 EFTS in the case of a Master’s student, or 3.00 EFTS in the case of a PhD student.

Eligibility:

The scholarship is tenable while the recipient is enrolled full-time in a programme for a Master’s or PhD degree at the University of Canterbury, working in environmental science or environmental conservation under the supervision of a member of the University of Canterbury staff. Applicants must undertake research on the environment, which may involve the application of environmental sciences in the broadest sense to the study of environmental problems or environmental conservation.

In recommending the award, the Committee will consider general suitability of the candidate, including academic achievement; character; and ability to pursue research.

Applications open 8 weeks before the application deadline. The next application opens around end of September.

The application deadlines for the scholarship are 30 November 2020 and 31 May 2021 for studies commencing AY 2021. Candidates must provide a one-A4-page research proposal to indicate that their research is aligned with the research interests of a staff member of the University of Canterbury.
