Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Dithapelo Keorapetse Hosts BTCL Acting CEO in Strategic Engagement

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dithapelo L. Keorapetse, received the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTCL), Ms. Boitumelo Paya, during a cordial meet-and-greet session held this afternoon. The engagement brought together Parliament’s leadership and BTCL executives to foster collaboration between the two institutions.

In his welcome remarks, Hon. Keorapetse emphasized Parliament’s constitutional mandate, which includes law-making, providing oversight, and ensuring accountability within the public and private sectors. He noted that these responsibilities are essential to upholding democracy and good governance in Botswana. The Speaker acknowledged BTCL as a vital stakeholder in the national development agenda and reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to maintaining open channels of communication with key institutions.

“BTCL is an important entity in our country’s socio-economic fabric. Your work in telecommunications and digital connectivity directly supports our vision for a knowledge-based economy. We look forward to continuous engagement and cooperation with your organization,” said Hon. Keorapetse.

During the meeting, Ms. Boitumelo Paya offered an insightful briefing on BTCL’s operations, strategic direction, and historical background. She highlighted that BTCL has been at the heart of Botswana’s telecommunications infrastructure since its inception in 1980 and is proudly celebrating 45 years of service this year.

Ms. Paya outlined the corporation’s evolution from a state-owned entity to a publicly listed company, noting its significant milestones in expanding digital access, modernizing communication technologies, and supporting the government’s digital transformation goals.

“This year marks a major milestone for BTCL as we commemorate 45 years of driving communication solutions across Botswana. We are proud of the journey and remain committed to innovating and delivering reliable services that connect communities and empower businesses,” Ms. Paya stated.

She also reaffirmed BTCL’s dedication to working with Parliament and other government institutions to ensure that telecommunications infrastructure continues to meet the evolving needs of citizens and the economy.

The meeting concluded with mutual appreciation for the dialogue, as both parties recognized the value of strengthening institutional partnerships to advance national progress.
