This Saturday, the University of Botswana Indoor Sports Arena will come alive with the sounds of worship, celebration, and heartfelt tribute as Spirit of Praise All Stars headline a powerful gospel concert in honour of the late Mmereki Marakakgoro, a revered icon of Botswana’s gospel music scene.
Marakakgoro, who passed away in 2023, left an indelible mark on the genre with his stirring vocals, profound lyrics, and unwavering commitment to faith-based music. This highly anticipated tribute concert brings together a blend of Botswana’s finest gospel artists and renowned South African stars for an unforgettable evening of praise and remembrance.
Botswana’s Gospel Talent to Shine on Home Soil
Homegrown gospel acts will take centre stage, including Noah, Tlo-tlo, the Calvary Apostolic Church Brass Band, and the widely loved Makayla Gospel Choir Clap and Tap. These artistes, known for their unique styles and powerful messages, will offer their best performances as a tribute to the gospel giant who paved the way for many.
For local audiences, the concert presents an opportunity to witness a new generation of talent paying homage to one of the genre’s pioneers while showcasing the richness and depth of Botswana’s gospel scene.
A Star-Studded Lineup from South Africa
Joining the tribute from across the border are some of South Africa’s most celebrated gospel voices. Fans can expect moving performances from Mmatema, Winnie Mashaba, Zaza, Nothando, Rofhiwa, Ayanda, Dumi Mkokstad, Omega, and Keke—each bringing their unique sound and energy to the stage.
Although gospel heavyweight Benjamin Dube has since stepped away from Spirit of Praise, his influence remains strong, and his legacy will be felt through the collective spirit of the evening.
More Than Music: A Platform for Growth and Spiritual Revival
Event organiser Letsogile Setlhong described the concert as both a spiritual revival and a launching pad for local talent. “This event is about honouring the life and music of Mmereki Marakakgoro, but it’s also about giving our local artistes a platform to grow and gain invaluable exposure,” said Setlhong.
With more than six local gospel performers set to share the stage with internationally acclaimed stars, the concert offers a rare and meaningful opportunity for cross-border collaboration and cultural exchange.
Anticipation Builds for a Night of Praise
Gospel lovers from across Gaborone and beyond are expected to fill the University of Botswana Indoor Sports Arena, with anticipation building around what promises to be one of the most spiritually uplifting concerts of the year.
The Spirit of Praise All Stars are known for their electrifying performances and deeply moving worship experiences, making this concert a fitting tribute to the late Marakakgoro’s legacy—a legacy rooted in faith, community, and the power of music to uplift the soul.
As voices rise and hearts unite in song this Saturday, Botswana will not only celebrate a gospel legend but also affirm the enduring power of music to heal, honour, and inspire.
