The Creative Sector Is Fast Becoming The New Economy

Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture’s Director – Youth Mr. Keabetswe Lesiela has said that it is evident that the creative sector is fast becoming the “New Economy” in the country as it unlocks trade doors and partnerships with the global world for the local artists.

Mr Lesiela was speaking at the Botswana International Music Conference (BIMC) held at Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) on Friday. The conference is one of activities of the Botswana International Music Week with the aim to create an open market for all music industry practitioners.

He emphasized that MYSC continues to look for opportunities of collaborating with the creative industry, in order to continue to support events that will propel the industry forward. He explained that BIMC has been one of such events hence the Ministry’s support to unlock potential and opportunities in the creative sector.

The Youth Director concluded by urging the industry players to make use of the establishment of the National Arts Council of Botswana with the mandate to coordinate and regulate the Arts and Culture sector of this country as well as to give strategic guidance and facilitate artists in commercializing their art.

The Founder of Kalawa Jazmee Records, Mr. Oscar Sibonginkosi Mdlongwa famously known as DJ Oskido who graced the event, stated that the local creatives should do the right cross-country partnerships and collaborations in order to grow the industry in leaps.
