In a strong show of international solidarity, the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of India have stepped forward with significant humanitarian support to help Botswana prepare for future natural disasters. Earlier this afternoon, both nations officially handed over their donations to the Minister for State President, Honourable Moeti C. Mohwasa, during a formal ceremony in Gaborone.

His Excellency Mr. Ahmet Idem Akay, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey, and High Commissioner of India, Mr. Bharath Kumar Kuthati, made the presentations on behalf of their respective governments. The contributions, collectively valued at nearly P1 million, are expected to strengthen Botswana’s disaster response capacity and equip emergency services with vital tools and supplies.

The Republic of Turkey, through a partnership with its Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) under the Ministry of Interior, donated emergency equipment worth P270,000. The donation includes:

  1. 50 deluxe large stretchers
  2. 23 portable generators
  3. 25 two-burner gas stoves
  4. 50 sleeping bags
  5. 50 gas heaters
  6. 50 3kg gas cylinders
  7. 25 four-man tents

These items will be crucial in enhancing the country’s ability to manage temporary shelter, medical care, and logistical operations in the wake of floods, storms, or other natural disasters.

Complementing Turkey’s support, the Government of India also contributed a substantial package of both non-medical and medical supplies valued at P700,000. While specific items were not detailed, the donation is aimed at equipping Botswana with advanced medical devices and general-purpose emergency materials that can be deployed rapidly in crisis situations.

Speaking at the handover, Honourable Mohwasa expressed Botswana’s deep appreciation to both countries for their generous contributions and ongoing commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. He noted that the donations come at a time when climate-related disasters are becoming more frequent and unpredictable, underscoring the need for proactive disaster preparedness and response systems.

He also reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to international cooperation and praised both Turkey and India for their consistent partnership in supporting the country’s development and humanitarian goals.

The gesture by Turkey and India not only highlights the importance of global partnerships in times of crisis but also reinforces the growing diplomatic ties between Botswana and the two nations. As extreme weather patterns continue to challenge vulnerable communities across the region, such donations serve as a critical lifeline, enhancing resilience and ensuring a faster and more coordinated response in times of need.
