UN comes to Khama’s defence

“President Khama welcomes the Urgent Appeal from the United Nations Special Rapporteur for extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions (UNSR) issued on 26 March 2021 and expresses his profound concern about the allegations of the States involvement in premeditated efforts to kill him.” UNSR raised a concern.

This comes after the story, reported on Mmegi Newspaper recently in which the Former President His Excellency Lt Gen. Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama told the publications that his life is in danger. The danger, Khama says, is sponsored by the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS).

According to Khama, the DIS not only wants to kill him but are also in plans to frame him and try to make him flee in the process. Though Khama cry harassment by the DIS, he has vowed not to run as they want him to.

“It is the first responsibility of a government in a democratic society to protect and safeguard the lives of its citizens. The suggestion that this Government of Botswana is involved in unlawful attempts to harm any citizen, let alone a former Head of State, is abhorrent. There should now be a credible, transparent and independent investigation into the allegations to provide swift justice and accountability. These latest allegations form part of an ongoing vendetta against President Khama and his supporters illuminating the desperation of a campaign orchestrated by the Government which is now out of control. The people of Botswana deserve better.” UNSR charged.

The UN has further raised a worry that despite assassination fears by the former President, the government still decided not to respond. According to UN, Botswana government’s silence on the matter raises eyebrows.

“The UNSR4 raises serious questions for the Government of Botswana to answer and, despite an obligation to cooperate with the UN’s human rights mechanisms, the Government has failed to respond. This deliberate silence speaks volumes for this Administration’s contempt for the rule of law, lack of respect for international norms and accountability, and an abdication of its responsibilities to citizens.” UNSR asserted.
