Stars Are Born – Track And Field Athletes

Botswana has come a long way since the inception of athletics association with its team not being rated at international stages to becoming one of the top watched out for at the same competitions.

The country’s athletics is governed by the Botswana Athletics Association which was formed less than six years after the independence of Botswana in June 18, 1972 but was later registered in 31st June 1979, naming Lt. General Mompati Merafhe as its President. Since then, the sport of track and field has enjoyed rapid growth and managed to gain international traction and popularity.

As a governing body, BAA alongside its stakeholders have set a goal to compete on the international. This is evidenced by Botswana athletics stars who have raised the country’s flag high with their stellar performances at various International Competitions. As it is often said that history is the source of all things great, previous patrons are a living proof that hard work and consistency is the motto in the world of athletics. They went one full steam ahead, setting quite a pace for the present youngsters to continue their legacy governed by discipline. These pioneers represented Botswana exceptionally well and brought countless medals back home.

As a unifier and a development strategy, athletics has taken Botswana to a higher level therefore development has since been an integral part of Botswana’s Policy & Development plan and 2022 marked a year of transformation for sports. This is evidenced by the amount of effort fused into dismantling of policies by government and its relevant stakeholders, to map ways geared at investing in sports. Botswana Athletics sporting code currently dominates in Botswana’s mainstream sports rankings. Let’s celebrate past and present great sports men and women who have excelled and are still raising the athletics and Botswana profile high.

Among great sports Men is the first and former Botswana olympian middle distance gold medalist Glody Dube who continues to contribute to Botswana Athletics through his Gaborone International Meet event.

We take this time to remember the great performances by all amongst them Amantle Montsho, Gable Garenamotse, Nigel Amos, Isaac Makwala and Letsile Tebogo who united the nation with their performances at the international competitions. #BW56#ProgressiveGrowth
