Concept albums are rare in contemporary jazz. Even rarer are projects that allow traditional African instruments to take centre stage. That is what makes Between Africa’s Rivers, the forthcoming release from Azania Jazz Co., particularly intriguing.
Instead of building the album around individual musicians, the collective has chosen to build every composition around a different indigenous African instrument. The approach transforms instruments into storytellers. Each track explores the distinctive character of one instrument, allowing listeners to appreciate its rhythm, tone and emotional range before moving to the next chapter.
The album also distinguishes itself through restraint. Its artwork features a solitary child sitting beside a river at sunset. The minimalism is intentional. Rather than showing performance, the cover invites contemplation, reinforcing the idea that music begins with listening.
