Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Hon. Noah S.L.M. Salakae, recently received a comprehensive briefing from the Ministry of Water and Human Settlement, led by Hon. Onneetse Ramogapi, on the progress and strategic outlook of the Bonno Housing Programme. The meeting, held in Gaborone, signaled a key step in fostering inter-ministerial collaboration to accelerate the success of Botswana’s ambitious nationwide housing initiative.
The Bonno Housing Programme is a flagship government effort aimed at improving access to affordable housing across the country, particularly for low and middle-income earners. During the session, Hon. Ramogapi and his team outlined ongoing projects, upcoming plans, and the key challenges faced in implementing the programme at scale. The briefing also included discussions on land availability, infrastructure development, and timelines for delivery in various regions.
Minister Salakae reaffirmed his Ministry’s commitment to supporting the programme through strategic infrastructure development. This includes the construction and maintenance of road networks, transport systems, and essential public utilities that are crucial to the sustainability of newly established housing communities.
“The success of the Bonno Housing Programme requires coordinated planning, efficient infrastructure delivery, and continuous stakeholder engagement. As the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, we are committed to aligning our efforts with the Ministry of Water and Human Settlement to ensure that the people of Botswana benefit fully from this transformative initiative,” said Hon. Salakae.
The ministers also agreed to form a joint task force to streamline planning processes, monitor progress, and resolve implementation hurdles as they arise. The collaboration aims to ensure that housing developments are delivered with the necessary services, including water reticulation, roads, and drainage systems.
Hon. Ramogapi welcomed the partnership, noting that the Ministry of Water and Human Settlement cannot achieve its goals in isolation. “We are building communities, not just houses. That means we must work closely with our counterparts in infrastructure and other sectors to ensure that every project is habitable, functional, and sustainable,” he stated.
The briefing concluded with a shared commitment to transparency, accountability, and timely delivery of housing solutions that align with Botswana’s Vision 2036 and National Development Plan priorities.
With this enhanced cooperation, the government is poised to make significant strides toward closing the housing gap and uplifting the quality of life for citizens nationwide.
