In a bold move to reshape its economic future, the Government of Botswana is actively pursuing a new economic model that is productive, inclusive, technology-driven, and globally competitive. This strategic shift was emphasized by Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe during his keynote address at the 2025 OPEC Fund Development Forum held on Tuesday in Austria.
Vice President Gaolathe acknowledged the important role that Botswana’s diamond-led growth model has played over the years. However, he made it clear that the traditional reliance on diamonds is no longer sufficient to realize the country’s ambitious vision of becoming a high-income economy.
“The diamond-led growth model had done its part and no longer suffices to achieve the vision of transforming Botswana into a high-income economy,” Mr. Gaolathe stated, signaling a new direction for the nation’s economic development.
To drive this transformation, the government has embraced a national strategy aimed at accelerating digital transformation across all sectors of government, the economy, and society. Central to this vision is the SmartBots initiative, a pioneering program that has successfully connected over 1.66 million citizens to broadband internet.
This wide-reaching digital connectivity is expected to unlock new opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and improved public service delivery. By leveraging technology, Botswana aims to enhance productivity, promote inclusivity, and compete effectively in the global economy.
Vice President Gaolathe’s address underscored the government’s commitment to building a future-ready economy that harnesses digital tools and infrastructure to empower its people and diversify beyond traditional industries.
As Botswana advances its SmartBots initiative and digital transformation agenda, the nation stands poised to set a new benchmark for sustainable and inclusive economic growth in Africa and beyond.
