The construction of the Francistown-Mathangwane dual carriageway, a major infrastructure development forming part of the 200km Francistown–Nata A3 road upgrade, is underway and currently 15 percent complete. The P1.3 billion project is expected to significantly enhance Botswana’s trade and transport network, with completion targeted for May 2027.

The road project, which falls under Botswana’s broader vision to improve national and regional connectivity, is a collaborative effort by three construction companies: Unik, Liftoff, and Evolution. The joint venture is tasked with delivering a modern dual carriageway that will ease traffic congestion, improve road safety, and support economic activities along the northern transport corridor.

Resident engineer Phemelo Mpowe confirmed that while progress is ongoing, the project is currently trailing slightly behind schedule. “We are approximately four percent behind the intended timeline due to persistent heavy rains between November and February, which affected earthworks and other ground preparations,” he explained.

Despite the weather-related delays, Mpowe assured that the project team is working diligently to recover lost time and ensure quality standards are maintained. Once completed, the Francistown-Mathangwane dual carriageway will serve as a vital link for freight and passenger traffic, reducing travel time and supporting smoother access to key markets in the region.

The upgrade is also expected to boost local employment and stimulate economic development in surrounding communities, as construction continues to create jobs and drive demand for services.

As Botswana invests in strategic infrastructure, the Francistown-Nata A3 road project stands out as a cornerstone in the country’s effort to position itself as a regional transport hub, supporting both domestic growth and international trade efficiency.
