In a powerful public lecture held yesterday, retired judge Hon. Justice Phumaphi paid tribute to Botswana’s founding president, Sir Seretse Khama, highlighting his instrumental role in promoting democracy and nation-building during his presidency.
Justice Phumaphi described Sir Seretse Khama as a true democrat whose leadership laid the foundation for Botswana’s democratic governance and political stability. Reflecting on Botswana’s journey since independence in 1966, Phumaphi noted that the country has enjoyed uninterrupted democracy—an achievement rooted in the visionary leadership of Sir Seretse Khama.
“Sir Seretse Khama transformed Botswana from one of the poorest nations in the world to a growing and developing country,” Justice Phumaphi said. He emphasized that Khama’s government managed the country’s diamond revenue with integrity and foresight, focusing on developing critical infrastructure and investing in skills development for the benefit of all citizens.
Narrating the values that defined Sir Seretse Khama’s leadership, Justice Phumaphi highlighted the late president’s strong belief in national unity and non-racialism. Khama was committed to building a united Botswana where all citizens, regardless of race or background, had equal opportunities.
Justice Phumaphi also praised Sir Seretse Khama’s steadfast commitment to human rights and judicial independence. “Even when there was pressure to turn Botswana into a one-party state, he stood firm and resisted,” he said. This decision, according to Phumaphi, protected Botswana’s multiparty democracy and ensured political pluralism.
Under Khama’s leadership, Botswana became internationally respected for upholding democratic principles, the rule of law, and good governance. His focus on non-discrimination and institutional integrity continues to shape Botswana’s democratic identity today.
As Botswana marks what would have been Sir Seretse Khama’s 104th birthday, Justice Phumaphi’s reflections serve as a timely reminder of the values that built the nation and the importance of preserving the democratic foundations laid by its founding president.
