The Minister of Health, Hon. Stephen Modise, today received a significant donation of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) from the Government of Japan, delivered through UNICEF. The donation marks a vital step in Botswana’s ongoing efforts to improve child health and nutrition across the country.

Hon. Modise expressed deep appreciation for the support, noting that the donated food supplies will strengthen the Ministry’s ability to address the alarming rates of undernutrition, overnutrition, and acute malnutrition affecting children in various parts of Botswana. He highlighted that the challenge is particularly severe in regions such as Ghanzi, Kang, Mabutsane, and Kweneng West, where vulnerable communities face limited access to quality nutrition and healthcare services.

The donation, made possible through Japan’s collaboration with UNICEF, is aimed at ensuring that 1,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition receive critical, life-saving treatment. RUTF products are specially formulated to provide essential nutrients for rapid recovery and are used globally in emergency nutrition interventions.

Speaking during the handover, the Ambassador of Japan to Botswana, His Excellency Shindo Yusuke, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to placing vulnerable populations at the heart of its development and humanitarian efforts. He emphasized that initiatives like this reflect Japan’s ongoing partnership with Botswana in supporting health systems and promoting the well-being of children.

This humanitarian gesture represents a growing international partnership focused on sustainable development and equitable health outcomes for all children in Botswana. With the support of strategic allies like Japan and UNICEF, the Ministry of Health is better positioned to tackle malnutrition and ensure that no child is left behind.
