The Minister of International Relations, Hon. Dr. Phenyo Butale, today signed the book of condolences at the Nigerian High Commission in Gaborone, Botswana, in honour of the late President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari. The solemn act was a gesture of solidarity and shared mourning between the people of Botswana and the Federal Republic of Nigeria following the passing of one of Africa’s most influential leaders.

President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on 13 July 2025 and was laid to rest on 15 July 2025. His passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from around the world, especially from African states, where he was regarded as a symbol of integrity, resilience, and Pan-African leadership.

In his remarks at the High Commission, Hon. Dr. Butale expressed Botswana’s deep condolences to the government and people of Nigeria. He acknowledged the significant role President Buhari played in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape and strengthening continental cooperation. Dr. Butale described Buhari as a “visionary statesman whose impact extended far beyond the borders of his homeland,” noting his commitment to good governance, regional peace, and economic development across Africa.

The visit to the High Commission was marked by a reflective atmosphere, with members of the diplomatic corps and Nigerian nationals in Botswana present to pay their respects. The book of condolences provides a formal avenue for dignitaries and citizens to share their messages of sympathy and appreciation for Buhari’s leadership and service.

President Buhari served Nigeria with distinction, first as a military head of state in the 1980s, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His efforts to combat corruption, improve national security, and foster economic reform left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s modern history.

Hon. Dr. Butale’s tribute underscores Botswana’s commitment to diplomatic relations and solidarity with fellow African nations during times of national mourning. As the continent bids farewell to a leader who helped shape Africa’s political narrative, messages like these serve as reminders of the unity and shared aspirations that bind African countries together.
