The government of Botswana has received a consignment of 36 tonnes of medicine from Dubai, which arrived today as part of the country’s response to the declared public health emergency. The official handover was marked by a ceremony led by the Honourable Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Nelson Ramaotwana.
Speaking at the event, Mr Ramaotwana stressed that the arrival of the medicines was not only about restocking supplies but also about reaffirming government’s promise to place the health of Batswana at the center of its development agenda. “This is about restoring confidence, saving lives, and sending a clear message that Botswana will not compromise the health of its people,” he said.
The consignment was facilitated through the Unity Health Care Fund in partnership with Botswana. According to the Minister, this intervention reflects a broader vision for the country’s health system. He highlighted that the national priorities remain anchored in Vision 2036 and aligned with global sustainable development goals, particularly universal access to essential medicines and vaccines.
Mr Ramaotwana also underlined the government’s commitment to tackling Non-Communicable Diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancers, which are increasingly affecting the population. He explained that the delivery of medicines supports the country’s efforts to ensure that every Motswana has access to the care they need.
In his remarks, the Minister noted that today’s milestone represents the start of a new standard for Botswana’s health response. “Innovation and collaboration must define how we meet the needs of our people,” he said. He further stressed that health is the foundation of national prosperity, pointing out that without a healthy population, there can be no productivity and no sustainable development.
Mr Ramaotwana assured citizens that the government has put measures in place to guarantee that the medicines will be distributed swiftly, fairly, and transparently to all health facilities. The arrival of the consignment marks a significant step in strengthening Botswana’s healthcare system and ensuring resilience against ongoing and future health challenges.
