The Government of Botswana has launched a new agricultural subsidy program, “Lemang Dijo,” aimed at addressing gaps in previous initiatives and strengthening household food security. The program provides a 100% subsidy on pesticides and tillage services for up to one hectare per farmer. In addition, participating farmers receive four bags of fertilizer through an e-voucher valued at P4,400.
Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr. Edwin Dikoloti, said the program is designed to ensure that support reaches the intended recipients. He highlighted that the initiative targets smallholder farmers and aims to make farming more productive and sustainable.
Dr. Dikoloti emphasized that “Lemang Dijo” is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve food self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imported food. By subsidizing key inputs, the program aims to lower production costs and encourage increased crop yields.
The e-voucher system is intended to streamline access to inputs, reduce misuse, and promote transparency in subsidy distribution. Farmers will be able to redeem vouchers at designated suppliers for the provided fertilizers and services.
The government expects the program to strengthen household food security, improve livelihoods for smallholder farmers, and contribute to overall national agricultural productivity. Farmers are encouraged to register promptly to benefit from the subsidies and support the country’s goal of sustainable food production.
