Deputy Commissioner of Police responsible for Support Services, Stephen Tsheko, hosted a delegation from the Drug Free World Organisation on 13 February 2026 at Police Headquarters in Gaborone. The delegation led the recently concluded National Cycle Tour Against Drugs, Gender Based Violence and Irresponsible Gambling. The initiative focused on crime prevention, youth awareness and community engagement across multiple regions. The meeting reflected a growing partnership between law enforcement and civil society in addressing social challenges that fuel criminal activity. It also reinforced the importance of coordinated strategies to reduce drug abuse, GBV and irresponsible gambling in Botswana.
During the engagement, Deputy Commissioner Tsheko expressed appreciation for the cycling initiative and its impact on communities. He stated that the police service values collaboration with stakeholders because joint efforts strengthen crime prevention outcomes. He highlighted that young people remain highly vulnerable both as perpetrators and victims, particularly in cases involving gender based violence, substance abuse and gambling related offences. By targeting youth audiences directly, the tour addressed the root causes of these problems before they escalate into criminal conduct. This approach aligns with national crime prevention goals that prioritize early intervention and community education.
Representing the organisation, Ms Onneile Dintwe thanked the Botswana Police Service for providing security throughout the tour. She noted that police escorts and operational support contributed significantly to the safety and success of the campaign. The team travelled more than 2000 kilometres and reached over 17000 young people, including both in school and out of school youth. Their route covered key centres such as Gantsi, Maun, Nata, Francistown and Mahalapye. These outreach sessions focused on practical education about the dangers of drugs, the consequences of GBV and the risks associated with irresponsible gambling.
The meeting also brought together senior leadership within the Botswana Police Service and international partners. Among those present were Director for Operations, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Wally, Director of Police Public Partnerships, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Cynthia Setilo, and a representative from the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, Ms Carmen Abu-Hijleh from the United States. Their participation signaled institutional commitment at both national and international levels. The engagement underscored how sustained partnerships can expand prevention campaigns, increase youth participation and strengthen public safety outcomes across Botswana.
