Basubiya Paramount Chief visits Rakops

Rakops kgotla was filled with ululations recently as the Basubiya’s Paramount Chief Munitenge Liswaani Sinvula paid his people a visit.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice President of the Republic of Botswana, also a Member of Parliament for Boteti West Mr Slumber Tsogwane, Senior Private Secretary to the Vice President, Mr Othata Batsetswe said the recognition of the Basubiya as a tribe in 2016 accorded them the rights and privileges of enjoying what other recognised tribes enjoy in this country. He said these rights mainly include the representation of the tribe in all decision making platforms.
Mr Batsetswe, said His Honour the Vice President still looks back with satisfaction at the decision he took as the then Minister of Local Government, a decision he would have granted other tribes had they expressed the same desire as the Bayei. His Honour’s message further encouraged the tribe to continue to participate in the constitutional review consultative process so that their desires and wishes could be integrated when the review takes place.

The Paramount Chief ‘s four day visit was aimed at engaging with the tribe, re-intergrating the Basubiya tribe in Boteti and in Chobe, promote and resuscitate the Subiya culture and also visit his predecessor’s grave Kgosi Munitenge Liswaani II who was buried in Rakops in 1800’s.

Among those who graced the event was the Member of Parliament for Chobe Honorable Machana Shamukuni.
