A group of Basotho from Botswana and Lesotho convened in Tlhareseleele on Friday for a cultural reunion event called Lebone La Tsosoloso. The gathering aims to restore and preserve Basotho traditions, which local leaders say are increasingly under threat.

Chief of Tlhareseleele, Morena Paul Letshikhoana, highlighted the importance of protecting cultural heritage. He said culture and language are inseparable and stressed the need to promote the Sotho language through formal education.

“It is critical to guard against cultural erosion and dilution,” Morena Letshikhoana said. He added that assimilation into dominant cultures can quickly erode traditional practices, customs, and values.

The event featured activities designed to celebrate Basotho heritage, including traditional songs, dances, and storytelling. Organisers hope the reunion will strengthen community ties and inspire younger generations to engage with their cultural roots.

Lebone La Tsosoloso is part of broader efforts by Basotho communities to ensure that cultural identity remains vibrant, even as globalization and external influences continue to shape everyday life.
